Released: 15th May 2026
Product: Sense Automate
Who it affects: Administrators and HR teams
Available on: Elite and Enterprise plans with access to Workflow Hub
Overview
The default Return to Work workflow is now configurable for organisations with access to Sense Automate.
Previously, the Return to Work form was triggered as soon as a qualifying sickness record was added. That remains the default behaviour, but administrators can now choose alternative trigger options to better match how their organisation manages return to work processes.
This replaces the need for separate Return to Work workflow variations based only on trigger timing.
What’s new
Configurable Return to Work trigger options
Administrators can now configure when the Return to Work form is triggered.
Available trigger options include:
Triggering the form immediately when a qualifying sickness record is added.
Triggering the form on the next working day that does not contain a sickness record.
Triggering the form automatically when the employee clocks back in for their first shift after returning to work.
What this means for you:
You can choose the trigger timing that best fits your return to work process, without needing a separate workflow variation.
Existing setups stay the same by default
The current behaviour remains the default option.
This means existing Return to Work workflow setups will continue to work as they do today unless an administrator chooses to update the workflow configuration.
What this means for you:
There is no immediate change for existing customers, but organisations with Automate access can now configure the workflow when they are ready.
More Return to Work configuration options coming soon
Further configuration options for Return to Work workflows using custom screens will follow in a future release.
What this means for you:
More flexibility is planned for organisations that use custom Return to Work forms or more tailored sickness follow-up processes.

Summary
This release gives administrators more control over how the default Return to Work workflow is triggered.
The existing immediate trigger remains the default, but organisations on Elite or Enterprise with Automate access can now configure the workflow to trigger later, such as on the next working day after sickness or when an employee clocks back in.
This makes the Return to Work process more flexible while reducing the need to manage multiple workflow variations.
