Overview
Sense Counsel is now available in AMI.
Counsel is an employment-law assistant designed to help managers, administrators and HR teams work through workplace questions in plain English.
It can use relevant employee information, contracts, company policies and records from Sense HR alongside current UK employment law and guidance to provide an answer based on the situation you describe.
Where supported, Counsel can also help with next steps, such as drafting correspondence, opening a case or arranging a meeting.
🖊️ Availability: Sense Counsel is not currently available for self-service installation from Agent Lab. Contact your Account Manager if your organisation would like to use it.
What’s new
Ask employment questions in plain English
You don’t need to know the legal terminology or choose a topic before getting started.
You can describe the situation naturally, for example:
“Mary has been late three times in two weeks. What should I do?”
“Jamie’s been off sick for nine days. What’s next?”
“A new mum wants to return part-time. Can I refuse?”
“Someone resigned during a disciplinary process. Do I still need to investigate?”
Counsel then investigates the information relevant to that particular situation.
Ask Sense Counsel an employment question
What this means for you:
Managers and HR teams can start with the workplace situation they are dealing with rather than needing to know which policy, process or area of employment law to investigate first.
Combine your HR information with current UK guidance
Counsel can bring together relevant information from Sense HR with external employment-law sources.
Depending on the question, this can include:
Employee records and employment information
Contracts
Company policies and handbook information
Absence and other relevant HR records
Current UK legislation and government guidance
ACAS guidance
Counsel can support questions across areas such as absence and sickness, conduct and disciplinary processes, holidays and leave, flexible working, performance, probation and employment exits.
Sense Counsel reviewing internal information
What this means for you:
Guidance can take account of the employee and your organisation’s own information rather than providing only a generic answer to an employment question.
See the sources behind the guidance
Counsel is designed to show the basis for its guidance.
Where relevant, it can explain:
What the employee’s contract says
What your company policies or handbook say
What current UK law or ACAS guidance says
External sources are provided with links where available. If Counsel cannot locate information it needs, it identifies the gap rather than presenting that information as if it had been found.
Sense Counsel guidance and sources
What this means for you:
You can see what information Counsel used, review the supporting sources and understand the basis for the suggested next steps.
Guidance that considers employment context
Counsel can take relevant employment information into account when responding, including differences between employment arrangements where these affect the answer.
This helps provide guidance that is more closely related to the individual situation being reviewed.
What this means for you:
The same workplace question does not automatically receive the same generic response regardless of the employee’s circumstances.
Important to know
Sense Counsel currently covers UK employment law only.
Its guidance is based on the information available in Sense HR and the external sources it can access at the time of the request. If relevant contracts, policies or employee records are unavailable, Counsel will identify this as part of its response.
Sense Counsel is designed to provide employment-law guidance and support decision-making. It is not a substitute for professional legal advice. Where a situation requires specialist legal advice, Counsel is designed to identify this rather than attempt to provide a definitive answer.
Summary
Sense Counsel brings employment-law guidance into AMI.
Users can describe a workplace situation in plain English and Counsel can bring together relevant employee records, contracts and company policies with current UK law and ACAS guidance to help explain the position and identify appropriate next steps.
Sense Counsel is currently available by request. Contact your Account Manager if your organisation would like access.
